Toronto FC pulled off the greatest upset in the club`s short history when they beat Mexican powerhouse Cruz Azul 2-1 last night at BMO Field in the opening game of the CONCACAF Champions League.
Many experts expected the match to be a walk in the park for Cruz Azul seeing as Toronto was facing a glut of injuries heading into the match but the Mexican Giants soon found out that was not to be the case when Martin Saric opened the scoring for the hosts with only 3 minutes gone sending the TFC faithful into raptures. Although both teams rested their star players as they have league matches to worry about this coming weekend, Cruz Azul still had an impressive squad on the pitch.
Reports from the game said that the visitors looked shell shocked and did not get going until about 40 minutes into game however Mista would soon stop their resurgence by scoring on the 44th minute to give the home side a 2-0 advantage heading into the break. Until this time Cruz Azul had not conceded a goal against MLS competition in four previous CONCACAF Champions League matches, which made this result even more impressive.
Toronto would carry on their domination for the rest of the game even with the introduction of starts Gerardo Torrado and super striker Javier Orozco after the break. Even some truly atrocious refereeing and a 90th-minute goal by Gimenez for the visitors did nothing to ruin the spirits of the TFC Faithful.
Toronto`s home form has been great this season and if TFC can figure out how to get a result away from home the future is very bright for Canada`s first MLS Franchise indeed.
