Toronto FC`s poor form away from home continues as they suffer a 1-0 loss to Conference rivals New York Red Bulls at the Red Bull Arena.
Toronto FC started the first ten minutes of the crucial match brightly pressing forward and keeping the ball in the Red Bulls half however the sheer class of New York would eventually see the home team come back.
Neither team were able to create any scoring opportunities until New York had their first real chance in the 21st minute when Thierry Henry, collecting a headed ball by former Aston Villla man Juan Pablo Angel. Henry would run forward before going down as Stefan Frei collected the ball to end the challenge. Henry would argue saying that Frei brought him down however referee Salazar was having none of it.
Red Bull`s Joel Lindpere was the man to break the deadlock after turning down the chance to represent his country and put club over country earlier on in the week by scoring . Seth Stammler would chip the ball over the TFC defence to Lindpere who beat Frei to make it 1-0 to New York.
Henry who faced a late fitness test would only play 45 minutes for New York before being replaced by Sinisa Ubiparipovic. Henry himself did state after the match he didn`t expect to play the whole game after lasting a mere 20 minutes against Chicago on the weekend.
The match would get a bit rough and ready with both teams being warned to cool their tempers in the second half.
Toronto seemed to be lacking any real quality and didn`t get a chance to equalize until the 67th minute when Canadian International Dwayne De Rosario's 35 yard free kick narrowly missed O'Brian White who would have surely converted the chance.
Toronto`s last chance of the game came when Mista created space for White again to have a crack at the goal only for the shot to go well over Greg Sutton`s goal.
Toronto now face a return match with the Red Bulls this Saturday at BMO Field.
